LAN Installation

Powered By: CAT-6

All local area networks installed by Terra-Net Helpdesk are Full Duplex Gigabit running over UTP CAT-6a. CAT-6a cabling allows for extended lengths of cable run, up to 300', without the need for repeating hardware. It also allows ample overhead for the ever increasing bandwidth requirements of evolving technology by supporting speeds of up to 10GBASE-T.

Quality

Copper atomThere has been a ton of junk CAT-5/CAT-6 cable that has been shipped to the U.S. from third world manufacturers. There is no shortage of problems caused by these substandard cables. Many of the manufacturers claim 100% copper content, but have actually smelted the copper with other ores, resulting in a less conductive hybrid for more lucrative profits. Many of such cables are not capable of the specifications claimed by the manufacturer, and some are, in fact, severe fire hazards! All CAT-6 installed by the Helpdesk is 100% copper, UL listed cable.

Jumbo Frames

In environments where communication with the outside world is not a consideration or certain multimedia environments, especially those dealing with high volumes of high bandwidth multimedia content, the media transmission unit [MTU] of traditional ethernetwork configurations is woefully inadequate, weighing in at a mere 1,500 bytes. In no uncertain terms, the default MTU is a relic of the pre-internet. Plans for the Internet 2 specify an MTU of 4000 bytes, and ever greater numbers of equipment manufacturers are supporting MTU size of 9,000 or more. Larger amounts of data per packet [9,000 versus 1,500] results in fewer CPU interrupt requests! Jumbo frames have been shown to cut CPU overhead by 50% in gigabit environments.
